The Yukon Shipwreck The HMCS Yukon A Mackenzie – class destroyer measuring 366’ long and 40’ wide sits in about 100’ of water. It was intentionally sunk in July 2000 to create an artificial reef in San Diego’s Wreck Alley. It served in the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) and later the Canadian Forces. 2. The Ruby E Shipwreck Location: Near Point LomaDepth: 70–85 feetSkill Level: Intermediate The Ruby E, a coast guard cutter ship, was the second vessel intentionally sunk off Mission Beach, in what is now known as San Diego’s Wreck Alley, sunk in 1987. Shallower and smaller (165 feet in length) than the Yukon, the Ruby E, can be explored thoroughly in just one dive, yet it will stimulate you in a way to keep you coming back for more. And because it is a shallower dive (55-70 feet) it is the perfect dive as a follow up to the deeper Yukon. 3. NOSC Tower Location: Wreck AlleyDepth: 40-60 feetSkill Level: Beginner to Intermediate Originally used as an ocean observation tower it was hit by a rogue wave in 1988 and fell into the ocean. With a max depth of 60 feet, the Tower is an excellent shallower option. Every square inch of the wreckage is covered with some type of marine life including sheephead and calico bass as well as opaleye and blacksmith. Good-sized perch hangs out on the interior of the metal mess in small groups and the largest mussels you will ever see! An underwater “jungle gym” of life!
